why did constantine adopt christianity?

because he saw its political potential.  constantine lived almost 300 years after jesus, he saw a christian movement that was unhindered by rome's attempts to squash it, while his own predecessors rose and fell one after the other, usually with nothing more to show for their lives aside from a chapter in a history book.
